NSA Suspends Boxing After Death of Ernest Akushey

The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has announced the suspension of all boxing activities in Ghana. This decision follows the sad death of Ghanaian boxer Ernest Akushey.

Akushey, who was popularly known as Bahubali, died on Tuesday, September 23. He passed away after suffering serious injuries during a fight with Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena on September 12.

After the fight, he was quickly taken to the LEKMA Hospital in Accra. Doctors treated him, but he later died from internal bleeding.

The tragic news shocked the boxing community and raised many questions about safety in the sport. Fans and officials are mourning the loss of a talented young boxer.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show on Wednesday, September 24, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah explained the suspension. He said it will remain until investigations into the circumstances surrounding the boxer’s death are completed.

“All boxing activities are hence suspended pending investigation into the death of Ernest Akushey,” he stated. He added that the welfare of athletes is the most important priority for the Authority.

The suspension means that no professional or amateur boxing matches will be held in the country for now. It also covers training and competitive events until further notice.

Officials from the Ghana Boxing Authority and the NSA will work together to find out what caused the death. They want to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again in the sport.

Akushey was a respected figure in boxing and had built a promising career. He competed in both the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.

In his professional journey, Akushey fought in eight bouts. Out of those fights, he won six and became known for his strength and determination in the ring.

His death has left his family, colleagues, and fans heartbroken. Many have described him as a disciplined athlete with a bright future.

The NSA has promised to communicate further updates after the investigations are completed. They have also extended their condolences to the family of Ernest Akushey.

For now, the boxing fraternity in Ghana will remain on hold. Everyone is waiting for answers and hoping for stronger safety measures in the sport.
