Ghana's Job Crisis Forces Graduates Into Low-Level Roles - Labour Expert

Labour expert Peter Bismark Kwofie has expressed concern about the rising unemployment rate in Ghana. He said many educated Ghanaians are now taking jobs far below their qualifications to survive.

Speaking to Adom News, Mr. Kwofie explained that there is nothing wrong with companies hiring overqualified workers. He said it is acceptable if the worker willingly chooses to take the job.

He noted that some people accept such jobs to stay active and earn some income. Others do so to gain experience while searching for better opportunities.

However, Mr. Kwofie said the decision must always come from the worker. He stressed that no one should be forced or pressured to accept a job far below their skill level.

He said such pressure is unfair and can affect a worker’s confidence. It can also reduce their motivation and performance at work.

Mr. Kwofie advised employers to be professional and careful in their hiring processes. He said hiring the wrong people for certain roles can affect the company’s performance.

He warned that employing unqualified people in key positions is unprofessional. It can harm both the organisation and the employees who work there.

According to him, this practice also discourages qualified professionals. It makes it hard for skilled workers to find jobs that match their abilities.

Mr. Kwofie expressed worry about the growing number of educated people working in low-level jobs. He said such jobs may provide short-term financial help but can harm career growth.

He explained that when professionals work below their level for too long, they lose important skills. Over time, they may also lose confidence in their abilities.

He advised job seekers to think carefully before taking jobs below their qualifications. He said they should weigh the short-term benefits against the long-term effects on their careers.

Mr. Kwofie encouraged workers to keep improving their skills through training. He also urged them to continue searching for better opportunities.

Finally, he called on the government and private sector to create decent and well-matched jobs. He said this will reduce unemployment and help people work in roles that fit their talents.
