Police Search For Tricycle Rider Who Attacked Officer At Garu Checkpoint

The Upper East Regional Police Command has started a search for a tricycle rider. He allegedly attacked a police officer during a stop-and-search operation in Garu.

The incident happened on Monday, October 6, 2025. It took place along the Garu–Nakpanduri road where officers were carrying out routine checks.

A police patrol team was working with Community Protection Assistants (CPAs). They had mounted a checkpoint to inspect vehicles and ensure road safety.

The police said the tricycle was carrying sacks of groundnuts. Some passengers were sitting on top of the load.

When officers signaled the rider to stop, he refused to cooperate. He became angry and attacked one of the officers on duty.

After the attack, the rider fled from the scene quickly. He left his passengers and goods behind.

Chief Inspector Abdul-Rahman Sumalia, the police spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He said investigations have already started to find the suspect.

The police are following several leads to locate the tricycle rider. They are confident he will soon be arrested and made to face the law.

“The Command is making every effort to arrest the tricycle rider,” the statement said. “He will face the full rigours of the law once captured.”

The police have asked residents of Garu and nearby towns for help. They want people to provide any useful information that can lead to the suspect’s arrest.

Officers say public cooperation is very important. It helps them keep the community safe from criminals.

The Upper East Regional Police Command has also stepped up road enforcement operations. These operations target commercial tricycle riders who break traffic rules.

The police said the checks are meant to reduce accidents on the roads. They also want to ensure that all riders follow the rules and drive safely.

Tricycle riders, often called aboboyaa or pragyia riders, are being reminded to obey police instructions. They must stop when signaled and allow officers to inspect their vehicles.

The police warned that anyone who attacks or resists an officer will face strict punishment. They said such actions are serious offences under the law.

The Command has assured the public that the suspect will be arrested soon. They also promised to continue working hard to keep the region safe and peaceful.
