A woman in India has been accused of drowning her six-year-old niece during a wedding event. Police say she acted out of jealousy because she believed the child looked prettier than her.
The accused woman has been identified as Poonam. She reportedly carried out the act during a family ceremony on Monday, December 1, in Panipat in northern India.
The young victim was a girl named Vidhi. She attended the wedding with her parents, her baby brother, and her grandmother.
During the celebration, Vidhi’s father received a troubling phone call. The caller told him that his daughter had suddenly gone missing.
The news caused panic among the family members. They immediately formed a search group to look for the child around the area.
After searching for about an hour, Vidhi’s grandmother made a heartbreaking discovery. She found the little girl unresponsive inside a storeroom close to the house.
Vidhi’s head was fully submerged in a plastic tub filled with water. The grandmother raised an alarm and called other relatives to the scene.
The family rushed Vidhi to NC Medical College in an attempt to save her. Doctors examined her and sadly declared her dead upon arrival.
Police officers soon arrested Poonam as the main suspect in the case. She later confessed to ending the child’s life during questioning.
Investigators say Poonam admitted that jealousy drove her to harm the girl. She reportedly did not want anyone to appear more beautiful than her at the wedding.

According to the investigation, Poonam saw Vidhi climbing the stairs to the upper area. She quietly followed the girl to the terrace and spoke to her for a short while.
The accused then led the child toward a plastic tub placed near the storeroom. She forced Vidhi into the tub and kept her submerged until she stopped moving.
Police say Poonam shut the storeroom door from the outside after the act. She then went downstairs and behaved as though nothing unusual had happened.
During interrogation, Poonam told officers that she disliked beautiful girls. She also claimed that she felt irritated whenever she saw them.
Local media reports say the woman made another shocking confession. She admitted to killing three other children in the past.
Among those victims were another niece and her own young son. She allegedly drowned them in the same manner as she did with Vidhi.
Authorities say they are now reviewing old cases linked to the family. They hope to gather more evidence related to Poonam’s earlier confessions.
Police officers have also sent the child’s body for a full post-mortem examination. They want to confirm all the details surrounding the cause of death.
