Award-winning Ghanaian gospel musician Grace Ashley has shared a sad story about why she stopped making songs for Ghana’s national football teams. She said a comment from former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah broke her heart and ended her passion for music for the team.
In an interview with ZionFelix, Grace Ashley said she always wrote songs out of love for Ghana. She never did it for money or fame.
She said her songs were made to inspire the players and unite Ghanaians during football tournaments. They also brought joy and hope to fans across the country.
Grace Ashley said she was proud anytime her songs were played at football matches. She felt happy that her music could lift the spirit of the nation.
However, she said her happiness ended after a painful comment from Stephen Appiah. The gospel star revealed that Appiah told her to stop composing songs if she was not being paid.
She said those words were very painful and discouraged her deeply. They made her feel unappreciated and ignored by the people she supported.
“Stephen Appiah told me point blank that if I wasn’t getting paid for the songs, I should stop composing them,” she recalled. “Those words hurt me so much, and that’s why I decided not to do any more songs for the Black Stars.”
Grace Ashley said she had never expected such a comment from someone she respected. She explained that she created the songs purely out of love for her country.
She said her goal was to motivate the players and bring unity among Ghanaians. She wanted her songs to make people proud of their national team.
The gospel star said she was disappointed that football officials also failed to appreciate her work. She believed her efforts were taken for granted even though her songs became popular.
She said the lack of recognition made her lose interest in making football songs. It also taught her that not everyone values selfless acts of love.
Grace Ashley said the experience left her with emotional pain. She said it took her a long time to forgive Stephen Appiah.
Although she has moved on, she said the memory still hurts. She now focuses on her gospel ministry and sings songs that bring faith and hope to people.
Grace Ashley said her story should remind people to appreciate others’ efforts. She believes kind words can inspire, but hurtful words can destroy motivation.
