The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has confirmed the recruitment of 13,500 nurses and midwives into the health sector. He said the move will greatly strengthen Ghana’s health workforce.
He announced the update at the 19th Biennial Conference of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) in Tamale. The conference took place on Wednesday, November 19.
Mr. Akandoh explained that the recruitment supports the government’s plan to improve frontline healthcare services. He noted that these efforts align with the Free Primary Healthcare and Mahama Cares initiatives.
He stated that the recruitment process was started by the previous administration. He added that the Mahama administration completed it successfully in 2025.
“In 2025, the Mahama administration successfully concluded the recruitment process initiated by the previous government, enrolling 13,500 nurses and midwives into the government payroll,” he said. He stressed that this shows the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery.
The Minister also addressed concerns about delays in salary payments for some newly recruited workers. He assured them that their payments will be made before the end of the month.
“I am pleased to announce that by the end of this month, all individuals whose salary processes experienced delays will receive their first payment,” he said. He encouraged the affected workers to remain patient as the processes are finalized.
Mr. Akandoh further revealed that the government is reviewing the negotiated Conditions of Service for health workers. He said these conditions are being considered for inclusion in the 2026 national budget.
He explained that this step shows the government’s dedication to fairness and welfare. He added that it also supports continuity in policy and planning.
“The government has strongly considered the negotiated Conditions of Service for implementation in the 2026 budget,” he stated. He said this move confirms the government’s commitment to improving the lives of nurses and midwives.
The Minister highlighted the importance of strong collaboration between the Ministry, labour institutions, and the GRNMA. He said these partnerships will help resolve challenges in deployment and training.
He noted that stable cooperation is critical for workforce development. He added that it also helps improve healthcare delivery across the country.
Mr. Akandoh encouraged continuous dialogue between stakeholders. He said such engagement will support long-term growth in the health sector.
He concluded by expressing gratitude to nurses and midwives for their dedication. He said their contributions are essential to national progress.
