The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested nine suspects after a violent police attack in the Saawie community. The incident has created major tension in the Jirapa Municipality.
The police attack happened on Friday, December 5, 2025, when officers visited the Saawie community for routine enquiries. The situation changed when about 30 youth confronted the Ghana Police Service team.
The angry youth reportedly assaulted the officers without warning. They overpowered the police and took four service weapons during the attack.
The mob left three officers injured before running away from the scene. The violent police attack shocked many residents in the Upper West Region.
Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, led a reinforcement team to the Saawie community. The team rescued the injured officers and restored calm in the Jirapa Municipality.
The reinforcement team quickly retrieved all four stolen weapons. Their prompt action prevented the guns from leaving the Saawie area.
Police say two magazines connected to the stolen weapons are still missing. A search operation has begun in the Upper West Region to recover the missing items.
Two injured officers were treated and later discharged from the hospital. The third officer with a fractured arm was referred to the Wa Regional Hospital for further treatment.
The Ghana Police Service says the nine arrested suspects will soon appear before court. Investigators are gathering more evidence from eyewitnesses in the Saawie community.
The Police Command has condemned the violent attack as unacceptable and dangerous. They say such acts undermine safety and public confidence in the Jirapa Municipality.
