The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) released the provisional results for the 2025 WASSCE a few days ago. The results have continued to attract public attention and national discussion.
Many people have expressed concern about the high number of students who failed this year. This write-up explains some possible causes behind the poor performance recorded in the examination.
Education is an important sector for every country. A country cannot make progress without a strong educational system.
The previous government introduced a major policy known as Free SHS. This policy began during the first term of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Since the introduction of Free SHS, the education sector became heavily politicised. Many people believe this political influence changed the direction of teaching and learning in senior high schools.
The government at the time worked hard to protect the Free SHS policy. They did this even when academic performance among students was gradually declining.
The authorities allegedly ensured that a large percentage of students passed their examinations. This was done to maintain public confidence in the policy.
However, the reality in many schools was different from the picture presented. Reports suggested that several students were not performing well academically.
It is also alleged that some students were encouraged to engage in examination malpractice. This encouragement was said to be an attempt to protect the policy and secure political advantage.
When the National Democratic Congress (NDC) took over power, they promised to reveal the true state of education in the country. They also assured citizens that the system would be made more transparent.
Another issue that might have contributed to this year’s mass failure is a statement made by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He made the statement several years ago on national television when addressing teacher welfare.
The former president said teachers should not expect to become millionaires from their profession. He added that anyone seeking wealth should choose a different career.
This statement angered many teachers across the country. Several teacher unions reacted strongly and some even went on strike.
Teachers play a key role in student performance. When their morale is low, students suffer the consequences.
At Raveman News Ghana, we believe this comment may have contributed to some of the long-term problems facing the education sector. We also think it may have influenced the performance of some students who wrote the 2025 WASSCE.
These issues together form a major part of the factors that contributed to the mass failure witnessed this year. They show how political actions and social attitudes can affect education outcomes.
In conclusion, the points raised in this article are based on observations and opinions from the Raveman News Ghana team. These views may not represent the full reality of the situation.
